Capturing the Douro’s Exuberant Fruit

Wines there are tasted blind by a panel that includes Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers from all over the world. When those judges decide to grant a Best in Show trophy, all Platinum award winners are re-tasted separately by the four competition co-chairs: a tough crowd in more ways than one.
When the 2020 Bulas Diwine Red Blend from the Douro scored 97 points and took home its Best in Show award—beating out 431 other Portuguese entries—we stepped in to lock down an allocation for Wine Access members. It’s an exuberant red table wine that the judge called a “perfumed head-turner.”
In an increasingly corporate Douro, Bulas remains family-owned. It was founded in 1951 when Jose Bulas Cruz bought the Quinta da Costa de Baixo, a vineyard not far from Quinta do Crasto in the PRIME Cima Corgo growing region. It’s run today by his descendents, siblings Maria Gabriel and Jose Afonso Bulas Cruz.
Bulas Diwine is made from 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz, 20% Touriga Franca, raised in stainless steel and neutral oak and bottled early to keep its ripe fruit fresh and juicy. It’s utterly crushable, and we can’t think of a more enticing, carefree red for Douro and Rhône fans to share with friends and family.
