A Variety Poised for a Comeback

The judges at Decanter’s 2022 World Wine Awards blind-tasted 1,358 Spanish reds. Just ten of them earned 97 points and Platinum honors. Among them were Bordeaux legend Michel Rolland’s Priorat, Bodegas Baigorri’s $60 Rioja, and the $99 Finca Los Hoyales Ribera del Duero.

Bodegas Agronavarra’s absolutely stunning 2021 Agramont Graciano was also on that distinguished list. An old-vine red made from a Spanish national-treasure grape that’s adored for its perfume and beautiful dark fruit, crafted with the help of illustrious Rioja enologist Isabel López Alfaro, this bottle outscored hundreds of far more expensive wines.

Graciano is the Rodney Dangerfield of Spanish grape varieties: Consumers and critics love the wines it makes, but growers? No respect. Graciano ripens late and has naturally low yields, so in Rioja it has been steadily phased out over decades.

This is a shame, and renowned critic Jancis Robinson noticed, once calling the grape “rare but fine and perfumed.” She also opined that “its absence in modern Rioja blends helps to explain some of the qualitative difference between the great Riojas of then and now.” The good news? Graciano is heat-resistant, so in the face of climate change it is almost inevitably poised for a comeback.

Many Wine Access members will remember Bodegas Manzanos Azagra Voche’s knockout Graciano Rioja, which is our single bestselling Spanish wine. The Agramont’s intense array of black cherry, blackberry compote, and cassis remind us very much of that wine. We can’t wait to pair it with a juicy Santa Maria–style tri-tip coupled with grilled wild mushrooms and polenta.
