A Great Year, High in Calistoga
Bennett Lane sits at the very top of Napa Valley, a few miles north of Calistoga, where the Vaca and Mayacamas ranges close in around Mount St. Helena. This is the warmest corner of the valley, and the heat ripens Cabernet to full, dark-fruited generosity. The cool nights that follow hold the line on acidity, so the wines keep their freshness and lift.
Randy and Lisa Lynch founded the winery in 2003, naming it after a nearby country road. Both the vineyards and the cellar are Napa Green certified. Chateau Montelena's holdings sit just down the way, in the same up-valley pocket that has drawn serious Cabernet growers to this northern stretch for decades.
The winemaking passed from founding winemaker Dave Phinney, of Orin Swift and The Prisoner fame, to Rob Hunter. Hunter is an alum of Groth—he was on the team there during the era of Napa's first perfect 100-point Cabernet—along with Robert Keenan, Lyeth, Markham, and Sterling. Three decades of Napa harvests have made him a precise hand in the cellar.
The 2021 growing season gave him exceptional material to work with. A second consecutive year of drought shrank the berries and thickened their skins, concentrating color, tannin, and flavor into small, intense fruit. It was a year of high quality and low quantity, the kind of season that rewards a careful winemaker with real depth.
In the glass, this is bold, up-valley Cabernet with a dark ruby core and a vibrant sheen. Aromas of purple florals lift over ripe cherry, cassis, and licorice, with graphite and dark cocoa underneath. The palate is lush and generous through the mid-palate, built on firm tannin that carries a long finish. A half-hour decant draws out its more polished side.
It is a Cabernet that reflects where it comes from—the warmth of Calistoga in its fruit, the elevation of Napa's northern reaches in its structure. Pour it with a ribeye or a rack of lamb, or open it on an ordinary weeknight.
