It’s Called Block X
It’s called Block X. And it’s one of the most historic plantings in California.
The 11-acre plot sits in the northwest corner of the legendary Bien Nacido Vineyard. One of the most celebrated sites in the United States, Bien Nacido has been named one of the “Top 25 Vineyards in the World” by Wine & Spirits and one of the “Top Five California Vineyards” by the Wall Street Journal.
From its 50-year-old vines, Block X produces some of the most exquisite Syrah in the state. And in the spectacular 2021 vintage, 100-point winemaker Maayan Koschitzky turned that fruit into the #1 Santa Barbara Syrah of the vintage. The 2021 La Pelle Syrah Block X earned a stellar 96-points and Cellar Selection honors from Wine Enthusiast. It’s a gorgeously concentrated bottling that—between the vineyard and the vintner—boasts as much pedigree as any red wine made in the state.
La Pelle is a partnership between Maayan and two renowned grapegrowers, Miguel Luna and Pete Richmond, both of the renowned Silverado Farming Company. In fact, it was Pete’s connection to the site that earned La Pelle the right to work with some of its most sought-after fruit.
Pete, as founder of Silverado Farming Company, is a giant in the wine business. But every oak was once an acorn, and years ago, he got his start working at Bien Nacido. It was that connection (plus his current stature, we’re sure) that turned the key to the finest plots of Bien Nacido. Now, the La Pelle team has turned that access into a special Bien Nacido series, and this bottle shows just how special Block X is.
