Just Lines on the Map
Sometimes, all it takes is a line on a map to create an unbeatable wine value.
Want proof? Look at Château Puy Castéra.
From the front door of the château, it’s a five-minute drive to Second Growth Cos d’Estournel ($275). If you’re willing to spend a whole ten minutes in the car, you could be at First Growths Lafite Rothschild ($825) and Mouton Rothschild ($750), or at Pontet-Canet ($150).
But while those fancy names are all either in nearby Saint-Estèphe or Pauillac, Château Puy Castéra actually is on the line between Saint-Estèphe and the Haut-Médoc, and so they produce two different wines. And while their Saint-Estèphe fetches high dollar, their “mere” Haut-Médoc bottling—made from just over the border—has a radically different number on the shelf.
The irony, of course, is that the gravel doesn’t stop at the border. The same broad sweep of Médoc terroir runs through this corner of Haut-Médoc, where well-drained soils and a temperate, maritime climate provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly. In the glass, that translates to the classic Left Bank profile: dark cassis, firm but polished tannins, and a structure built for both early pleasure and mid-term aging.
The estate has long roots in the area—it takes its name from Latin words for a hilltop camp or fort—but its modern form was established in 1973 by the descendents of Henri Marès, one of the most important viticultural figures in French wine history. Since then, the ambitious Roux family has taken over, pouring in money to bring the estate to a higher level.
2022 is going to go down as an absolutely legendary year in Bordeaux. “A Place Beyond Praise” is how Vinous titled their report on the vintage, in which they declared: “The 2022 vintage serves as a timely reminder that when Bordeaux fires on all cylinders, it is untouchable.” It was a warm, sunny year that gave lush textures, plenty of fruit, and surprising vibrancy given the solar nature of the year.
