Poise and Purpose from a South African Mountainside

South Africa is quickly establishing itself as a world-class Chenin Blanc region. Wine Spectator calls the country’s Chenin “nothing short of astounding,” and if you want powerful, in-the-glass proof, take a sip of the bright and balanced 2023 Land of Hope Reserve.

This is an exuberant wine, displaying Chenin’s ability to retain coiled energy, even in warm climates. It takes multiple facets of the grape’s versatile character—rich stone fruit and pear, floral depth, plus mineral energy—and brings them together in seamless union. Rich and concentrated, but with a refreshing undercurrent of acidity and a barely perceptible 2.2 grams of residual sugar, it fares just as well with luxe cuisine as it does on its own.

Land of Hope’s Chenin Blanc vines sit on an ocean-facing slope of Helderberg Mountain, where they’re just a few miles from the cool waters of False Bay. Maritime winds keep the vines cool, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors while maintaining freshness. The well-draining granitic soils stress the vines, which adds to the grapes’ concentration. The team tends these vines using sustainable and organic practices, aiming to channel their picturesque vineyard site with exceptional purity.

South Africa is the world’s largest producer of Chenin Blanc, the country’s most widely planted grape. However, only recently have winemakers taken to producing meticulously crafted single-vineyard bottlings aimed at rivaling the world-class iterations from Vouvray, Savennières, and California. Land of Hope is part of that new wave, and they’re doing their part to champion Chenin Blanc as the country’s most noble white grape.

The winery’s aims go beyond great wine: Established in 2007, the Land of Hope Trust designates half of all the company’s profits for providing educational opportunities and skills training for employees’ children—a purpose that’s as inspiring as the wine itself.

For anyone unacquainted with the delights of South African Chenin, this is a perfect introduction. And for long-time Chenin lovers, it’s a reminder of everything that makes the variety so irresistible.
