A Skyline Ridge Benchmark

The Santa Cruz Mountains are one of the most thrilling, and least understood, white-wine regions in California. Vines cling to steep ridgelines high above Silicon Valley, cooled by Pacific fog and rooted in fractured marine shale and sandstone. It’s a place that rewards patience and punishes shortcuts—low yields, hard farming, and elevation that most of California can only envy.

Thomas Fogarty is one of the appellation’s founding names. The estate farms roughly 25 acres across a handful of tiny sites between about 1,400 and 2,000 feet, with the bulk of the fruit for this wine coming from the estate’s home ground on Skyline Ridge. The farming is done by hand and organically, and the mountain elevation delivers the kind of natural acidity that gives these wines their electricity.

We have Dr. Thomas Fogarty to thank for the site itself. A pioneering surgeon and inventor, he secured this rugged, high-elevation land in the 1970s and planted the first vines ever to go into Skyline Ridge—laying the groundwork for what’s now regarded as some of the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir terroir in the state.

The wines are made by Nathan Kandler, who has been on the estate since 2004 and works with a deliberately light hand. Native-yeast fermentations and restrained oak let the vineyard speak rather than the cellar. This bottling spent 10 months in French oak, just 20% of it new, followed by six months in stainless steel to keep everything bright and precise.

In the glass, it’s all energy and detail—green apple and zesty lemon, a whisper of marzipan, and a saline, mineral current running underneath. It’s medium-bodied but tightly wound, with genuine grip and length, as happy alongside roast chicken as it is on its own.

This is what the Santa Cruz Mountains do better than almost anywhere: Chardonnay that trades weight for tension, and richness for precision. In the right hands, in a great year, it’s a benchmark expression of a legendary California appellation.
