The Côte des Blancs in a Glass
Among the grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs, a handful of names come up every time serious Champagne lovers talk about Chardonnay: Avize, Cramant, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Chouilly.
Each brings something distinct to the conversation—Cramant's richness and vinosity, Mesnil's laser-like precision and longevity, Avize's elegance and finesse, Oger's floral generosity, Chouilly's softness and approachability. Most producers spend careers trying to capture one of them convincingly. Adrien Bergère put all five in this bottle.
The Bergère family has been farming vines in the Vallée du Petit Morin since 1848, when the region was still primarily agricultural and Champagne as we know it was only beginning to take shape. Albert Bergère founded Maison Bergère in 1949 to better promote the family's terroir, and the estate has grown steadily ever since, now covering 45 hectares.
Adrien, the latest generation to take the reins, has brought a new seriousness to both vineyard and cellar. He is increasingly farming organically across the estate, with full certification expected soon—a commitment that reflects a broader philosophy of letting the land speak as clearly as possible.
That philosophy carries directly into the winemaking. This Blanc de Blancs is partially fermented in barrel, which adds a layer of texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine's natural freshness. It's bottled unfiltered and aged under cork—the traditional agrafe method, the same technique used for riddling before modern cages took over—which is expensive but builds fantastic complexity. A small portion of reserve wines, around 20%, adds depth and consistency to the blend. The dosage is a restrained 3g/L, leaving the wine's chalky mineral expression firmly in charge.
What you get in the glass is precisely what that sourcing and care promises: vibrant and tightly focused, with crisp apple and citrus framed by stony minerality, integrated oak, and a finish that lingers long after you've set the glass down.
