This dark ruby colored wine has a distinctly peppery nose, with mushrooms, roses and curry. (A faint rubbery aroma when opened vanished by the next day). There is very little acidity on the palate, with smooth vanilla, green pepper, and soft fruits (apricot, almond, vanilla) wrapped in a slightly sweet body. Smooth, rich and complex. Superbly integrated: rich, complex and spicey, yet soft and subtle. [tasted Feb. 2001]. 4 and 1/2 stars.
Sweet red fruit and mocha are the primary impressions of this wine and somewhat out of proportion with the spice and garriguey qualities that I prefer in Chateauneufs. That said however, the palate is tremendously rich and weighty with terrific concentration. I'm sitting on my remaining two bottles for several years at least. I'm confident with time the flavors will become more intergrated.
