Austria 2010

The 2010 vintage in Austria was a challenging one, producing a very small crop of quality whites but variable reds. To begin, spring was wet and cool, and the growing cycle was delayed by a month in some regions. The weather was unsettled through flowering and a small, uneven crop was set. With yields reduced from 10 to 40%, Austria was looking at its lightest harvest in 25 years.

July warmed up and the vines progressed for a while, but it wasn’t to last. August was cool and wet, as were September and October. One favorable side effect from the coulure that caused the reduction in yields in the spring was loose set bunches, which ended up reducing the risk of rot in the cool, wet conditions that followed. In the brief spells of sunny weather during the harvest, the vines could focus their energies on fewer, healthier berries. Letting the grapes hang and eke out as much ripeness as possible was the key, and the wines show the character of the season in their crisp, focused acidity. Racy, classically styled and bright describe the general impression of the whites, but the reds are a bit less successful. The cool season hampered their development, and while there are some fine examples, the vintage is somewhat lighter and uneven.
