The Super Tuscan that has Galloni “Continually Impressed”
No Super Tuscan cellar is complete without Caiarossa, which has been turning heads since its inaugural 2002 vintage. Vinous founder Antonio Galloni has proclaimed that he’s “continually impressed with the overall quality level” of the estate. But that should come as no surprise given the owner’s Margaux properties — Third Growth Château Giscours and Fifth Growth Château du Tertre. The same attention to detail distinguishing these estates in the growing, harvesting and aging of Bordeaux varieties can be found at Caiarossa, where they are blended with Tuscan Sangiovese. The 2012 Caiarossa Rosso di Toscana earned 95 points from James Suckling, who gushed over its “full body, round and silky tannins.”
The mastermind behind Caiarossa’s success is Eric Albada Jelgersma, the Dutch entrepreneur whose mid-1990s acquisitions of Third Growth Château Giscours and Fifth Growth Château du Tertre in Margaux made him a major player in the wine world. When Tuscany piqued his interest a few years later, he knew that whatever estate he purchased would have to measure up to his two Bordeaux properties. When Jelgersma noted how Caiarossa enjoyed Margaux-like hot summers but was tempered by cooling maritime breezes, and sat on intensely red-hued and jasper-packed soils, he bought the Tuscan estate.
In 2012, a serendipitous late-August rain broke up a historic drought, tempering vineyard strain and producing a collection of fresh, voluptuous berries. The result is a juicy expression of terroir reminiscent of a top-growth Bordeaux or a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon kissed by the Tuscan countryside — prepare to be impressed.
