In the mid-70s, Dan Duckhorn and the brilliant winemaker Ric Forman conceived of an ambitious plan: to coax Bordeaux-like excellence from the warm, rolling hills of Napa Valley. The duo flew to France and spent the better part of a year in deep study of the most prestigious estates of the Right and Left Bank. Whey they returned to Napa, they found 15 acres they believed could offer First Growth potential on the West Coast. Time would prove them right.
Located on the northeastern side of Napa Valley, the property had formerly belonging to legendary San Francisco philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit, and had since been planted to varieties including Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rocky volcanic soils forced roots to dig deep for moisture and nutrients; stones on the surface grew hot with the sun’s rays, aiding ripening and shielding vines from frost. Three lonely palm trees were all that remained of the former glory of the Coit days; they became the name and symbol for Dan Duckhorn’s iconic Three Palms Merlot, the bar by which Napa Valley Merlot is measured.
As demand exploded, Three Palms Merlot became increasingly difficult to locate at retail. But it was the far smaller production of Duckhorn’s Three Palms Cabernet Sauvignon that most captured the imagination of Napa Valley collectors.
