Clearly a vintage to buy for lovers of white Burgundies

No Competition for this White Burgundy

Competition to land a coveted spot on the best wine lists at NYC hotspots like Bar Boulud, Gramercy Tavern, Le Bernardin, and Eleven Madison Park — is fierce. But just a few producers are necessary when it comes to Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé, the most storied appellations of the Mâconnais. The top domaine is that of Gilles and Jean-Jacques Corsin, whose recent vintages of Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes have blown away the competition.

In 2014 — one of the greatest White Burgundy vintages in recent memory — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate contributed a 97-point rating — its highest score for a white Burgundy vintage ever. Stephen Tanzer declared, “For lovers of classic white Burgundies, 2014 is clearly a vintage to buy,” while Wine Spectator added a whopping 93- to 96-point rating, suggesting 2014 rivals the epic 1985 vintage.

The 2014 Domaine Corsin Pouilly-Fuisse was drawn from 50+year-old vines planted in Solutré and Fuissé in the center cut of the storied appellation. If you can resist polishing off a bottle on night one, you’ll be stunned again on night two, and delighted on night three.

Lovers of White Burgundy who heed our advice on this one will look back on the summer of 2017 and fondly recall this intensely mineral-driven Chardonnay, and all the accompanying meals it elevated, or all the pre-dinner drinks in dwindling evening-time heat.

Excellent white wine, particularly when chilled slightly, for serving with a fish course at a dinner party. Good value. It can be served with confidence.
