A past Wine Access story about 2016 Riposte Pinot Noir The Dagger Adelaide Hills

$19.99 Halliday's Top 20 wine under $25

A Legend’s Pioneering Pinot Noir

Winemaking legend Tim Knappstein, brings 45 years of decorated craftsmanship to the beautiful cool-climate vineyards of Adelaide Hills. In 2016, the pioneering Knappstein turned out this deep, dark Pinot Noir that earned 94 points from Australia’s foremost wine critic, James Halliday, and a place on his 2017 “Top 20 Wines under $25” list.  Every time we’ve offered this wine it has sold out, unsurprising at just $19.99 for this deep, dark, lush, and juicy cool-climate Pinot.

Today, the Adelaide Hills may be the most exciting wine region in all of Australia. Tim Knappstein’s initial sense of exploration has inspired many looking to make wine in the region. The fever-pitch excitement in the Adelaide Hills is seeing a tribe of talented young winemakers growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and many other cool-climate grapes like Nebbiolo, Grüner Veltliner, and Chenin Blanc. Each vintage seems to bring fresh faces and new ideas entering the experimental incubator that has become the Adelaide Hills.

Tim Knappstein has been working very closely with these enterprising young growers in choosing sources for his Riposte Pinot Noir. In 2016, working with pristine fruit from prime Adelaide Hills sites, Charleston and Gumeracha, Tim turned out one of the most chiseled, Burgundian-style Pinots to date. The Wine Companion’s editor in chief, James Halliday, praised its “amount of complex varietal fruits” with a price tag that is “astonishingly low.”

In 2016, Pinot Noir ripened to perfection in the Adelaide Hills and the seasoned Knappstein made the most of it. We’ll make this one easy for you: With a 94-point score and at just $19.99 per bottle, pile the 2016 Riposte Pinot Noir “The Dagger” into your cellar by the case. Pinot Noir values like these don’t come around very often.

I found this wine disappointing. I think that the description oversold the wine, which did not have the quality that was advertised. The wine certainly did not stand up well against the New Zealand pinot noirs that I have purchased locally.
