Domaine Christian Serafin Facts

Domaine Christian Serafin was founded in 1947 through the bootstrapping efforts of Polish immigrant Stanislaus Serafin. Serafin arrived in Gevrey-Chambertin from Poland in the late 1930s. He didn't have much time to get settled, however, before the Second World War broke out and he joined the Polish Independent Highland Rifle Brigade. After spending five years as a German prisoner of war, Stanislaus eventually made it back to Gevrey where he worked in the vineyards of Livera, an Italian winemaker. Stanislaus began teaching himself the art of winemaking and, with the help of his Italian benefactor, started to piece together his own estate from plots which had fallen into disuse during the war. In 1957, Stanislaus' son, Christian, joined his father, and together they constructed a house and cave for the estate. Today the domaine is run by Christian's daughter and his niece is preparing to take the winemaking reins.

Produced organically, the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Domaine Serafin are known for their concentration and balance, loaded with sweet, spicy fruit and enticing toasty oak. A high percentage of old vines in Serafin's holdings, as well as aggressive use of oak, contributes to the spicy complexity and concentration of these wines.
