Spain’s most collectable red wine

The Latour of Spain

Notoriously rare and difficult to obtain, Unico’s demand always outstrips its supply. The British Embassy famously tried to secure enough Unico for a royal dinner for Queen Elizabeth II, but the Queen was granted just four cases from the winery. With a 100-point score already under its belt, the 2006 vintage is shaping up to be one of the most coveted ever.

This special allocation was made possible directly by Vega Sicilia’s wonderful Alvarez family, making the Wine Access guarantee of quality impossible to beat. When we first released these bottles last year, the disappeared and garnered the reviews you’d expect from Spain’s top growth: “Among the best of the best.”

We went back to the Avarez family, and today have secured a final allocation of this 100-point red, direct from the estate and in perfect provenance. This rare and historic wine earned 100 points from Wine Spectator’s former European Bureau Chief James Suckling, and 98 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which called it, “one of the best recent vintages of Unico.”

Affectionately termed, “The Latour of Spain,” as Vega Sicilia is called, this release is a true masterpiece, aged for 12 years in cool cellars at the estate, showing layers of wild black fruits, exotic spices, anise, and truffles.

It is a massive accomplishment, which will reward now in after twelve years of softening in Vega Sicilia’s cellars, and will develop gorgeous complexity with time in your cellar. Recently released at a price that delivers real value when compared with the only wines on equal footing as Vega Sicilia—Bordeaux’s First Growths and well-known cult Napa Cabs—this is a must-drink stepping stone for anyone interested in the world’s great wines, and a rare chance to enjoy Vega Sicilia’s one-of-a-kind bottling on your own time, without the steep mark-ups of the auction block or Michelin-starred restaurants.

In his triple-digit review, James Suckling described 2006 Unico as: “Incredibly floral and beautiful with dark berry, spice, cedar and mint. Chinese plums. Asian spices. Bark. Tea. Full body, dense and so soft and complex. The finish goes on for minutes. Endless and fine. January 2018 release. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with.” We couldn’t agree more, this is a wine to linger and meditate over. It’s almost a shame to savour it with anything other than hard, aged cheeses.

We cannot recommend this wine highly enough. When compared to Bordeaux First Growths and cult Napa Cabernets of equal quality, this just-released and 12-year-old wine, matured in oak for an incredible 6 years, is an exceptional value.  Spain’s most collectable red wine, Vega Sicilia’s Unico is legendary—one of the great wines of the world.

The long anticipated 2006—released after the 2007 and 2008!—will go down as one of the great vintages of Unico in the 21st century. The wine is profound and majestic, providing deeply thought-provoking pleasure, with layers of wild black fruits, exotic spices, anise, truffles, game, wild dried herbs and potpourri. The palate is thick and dense, yet seamlessly balanced with fresh acidity and rich velvety tannins. A meditation wine that gives wondrous pleasure now, but will reward further cellaring through to 2040.
