“Beautifully Balanced” Effort from Centuries-Old Estate

“Beautifully Balanced” Effort from Centuries-Old Estate

Adventurous lovers of Napa Cabernet and Rhône blends take note: this dual 94-point critically acclaimed effort from one of Douro’s greatest wineries is required drinking. Most widely know for Port, this region has for years been producing magnificent dry wines, but few are as classic a representation of the terroir as the 2013 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines.

The Quinta do Crasto estate dates back to the 17th century, but its modern revitalization by Leonor Roquette, a descendent of a previous owner, began in 1981. The property, comprising 173 acres of vineyards on the right bank of the majestic Douro River, possesses several traits that lend this wine its remarkable character. The soil is flaky schist, forcing roots to dig deep and retaining warmth throughout the dry, hot days. The vineyards are south-facing, perched at an altitude of 2,000 feet. But the real magic comes from the ancient vines: 70 years in age on average and low-yielding, the gnarled Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tempranillo plants offer up breathtaking concentration and complexity.

The critics were as captivated by the magic of this spice-laced 2013 release as we were. 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate for this “terrific Old Vines Reserve,” which was “beautifully balanced, with a feel of sophistication and refinement.” Wine Enthusiast matched with another 94 points, claiming, “the resulting concentration and depth of flavor are remarkable.” We call it a showstopper that speaks as eloquently and movingly of Portugal’s land as her native poets.
