We Drew the Inside Straight

A historic estate. A legendary terroir. And one of the greatest vintages Piedmont has ever seen.

Sure, finding a Barolo that hits that trifecta is always possible, just like procuring NBA Finals tickets is possible—if you don’t mind ponying up big cash. But seeking out a Barolo DEAL that meets those three criteria can seem as foolhardy as drawing to an inside straight.

However, extremely improbable does not equal impossible, and despite the odds, we drew the right card when we landed the 2016 Costa di Bussia Tenuta Arnulfo Bussia Barolo.

Crafted by the esteemed Costa di Bussia and grown in Barolo’s famous Bussia cru, this 95-point stunner hails from a season that Vinous Antonio Galloni said produced “truly spectacular, breathtaking wines that captures all the pedigree that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of.”

The conditions that define the famous Bussia district of Monforte d’Alba—ample sunshine, a mix of lean and fertile soils, and a cool, moist climate—arguably produce the most powerful expressions of Nebbiolo in northwest Italy.

Costa di Bussia was founded in 1874 by Luigi Arnulfo, a legend of Barolo who was involved in some of the first exports of Barolo to the United States. His estate even has the thank-you notes from Carlo Rossi himself to prove it!

The property, now owned by the Sartirano family, whose roots in Piedmont date back to the late 1800s, comprises just 11 acres of Nebbiolo vines. This bottle hails from the Franzione Bussia Bovi Vineyard, which lies directly in front of the estate.

Barolo with this pedigree doesn’t surface often, and for the money, you just can’t top it.
