Our Best Deal Ever on 96-Point Vintage Port

Vintage ports are the rare breed of wine that delights when young and astounds after decades of aging. This 96-point beauty won top honors from Wine Enthusiast, scoring a spot on their coveted Top 100 list. It was the lone port to make the cut.

The 2016 Pocas Junior Vintage Port enthralled us with its unctuous blackberry compote and espresso flavors—to name only a fraction of what leaped out of the glass—and its discovery almost made us miss our train to Lisbon.

We were heading toward the station in Vila Nova de Gaia, but since we aren’t in Portugal's vinous epicenter every day we figured we could squeeze in a quick bite and final glass before boarding.

“You just know this place has to be good,” said our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero as he stopped in front of a gloriously old school-looking restaurant, Casa dos Leitões das Devesas. It was 12:05. The train left at 12:30. There was only time for cheese, which we decided to wash down with an oldish-looking port sitting on the bar.

Time froze as the wine’s otherworldly purity of sweet fruit took over. The bartender motioned outside and said that the wine’s producer, Pocas Junior, was next door. There was only time to snap a photo as we dashed to our waiting train, but we knew we would cross paths with Pocas Junior again.

While the wine we had that day was brilliant, Pocas Junior’s thrilling 2016 vintage port leaves no doubt that they are a best-in-class estate. It’s an amazing way to experience a vintage which James Suckling believes “may prove to be a modern legend for vintage Port.”
