Where the Douro Finds Freshness
João Portugal Ramos remade the Alentejo. José Maria Soares Franco spent over two decades at Casa Ferreirinha, personally overseeing Barca Velha—Portugal’s most prestigious dry red table wine, which runs north of $500 per bottle.
In 2007, they decided to make wine together in the Douro.
The winery they founded, Duorum—Latin for “from two”—has since become one of the most respected addresses in Portuguese wine. The Altitude line is their answer to a specific question: what happens when you take the Douro Superior’s inherent power and run it through vineyards cool and elevated enough to hold onto freshness?
They found the right ground at Quinta de Castelo Melhor, a property perched between 400 and 500 meters above sea level on a north-facing slope inside the Douro International Natural Park. The Douro Superior is the hottest, driest stretch of the valley—far from Atlantic influence and close to the Spanish border. At elevation and facing north, temperatures drop considerably compared to the valley floor, and the ancient schist soil delivers the mineral backbone the region is built on.
The blend is Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão—Nacional for structure and depth, Franca for its lifted, perfumed character, and the rarer Tinto Cão for the length and finesse it brings to the finish. All three are native Portuguese varieties, hand-harvested into small cases from the high terraces at Castelo Melhor.
No oak touches this wine at any stage. The grapes go into stainless steel lagares—the traditional shallow troughs of the Douro—where robotized treading gently extracts color and character during a cold pre-fermentation maceration before fermentation begins. The wine then stays in stainless through bottling. In a region where barrel aging is the default, this is a deliberate choice: fruit stays bright, texture stays clean, and the terroir at Castelo Melhor stays in the foreground.
2022 was a warm year across the Douro, and the wine carries that warmth—denser and more powerful than average, with the altitude doing the work of keeping it honest.
