Made Only in the Best Vintages…and This Is One of the Finest

Domaine du Grand Tinel’s Alexis Establet is a classic of the region, composed of 100% Grenache drawn entirely from an ancient-vine plot known as La Gardiole, where the bushes exceed a century in age. First crafted in 1993, this bottling is made only in the best vintages—and according to Jeb Dunnuck, the 2019 “might be one of the finest examples of this cuvée I’ve tasted.”

It’s worth asking how a producer harnesses the kind of dense, ruby-hued power that led Dunnuck to declare the Alexis Establet “a full-bodied, pure, beautifully balanced, seamless 2019 that has loads of character and charm.”

A triangulation of vine, vintage, and grape created the extraordinary richness and complexity this 2019 CDP star delivers. The vines in this case are a staggering 120 years in age—low in productivity, yet filling their fruit with monumental concentration and nuances captured by roots that have descended dozens of feet underground.

The 2019 vintage in Southern Rhône was like an NFL draft where all the top picks are tree-trunk-necked fullbacks. A combination of dry heat and plenty of rain that swelled vineyard’s water reserves allowed grapes to hit record levels of ripeness. “These are rich, powerful wines that have full-bodied, structured profiles that are going to benefit from bottle age,” wrote Dunnuck.

Built to cruise at least a decade in the cellar, this bombshell Rhône will evolve beautifully, but it’s also in stellar drinking shape today.
