One of California’s Few Must-Have Wines

Dan Petroski’s Massican is always an absolute thrill to offer.

It’s not because Dan was the San Francisco Chronicle’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year, or because Annia has earned spots on Wine Enthusiast’s Top Ten and Wine Spectator’s Top 100. It’s not even because it has been poured at The French Laundry, The Restaurant at Meadowood, and FIG in Charleston.

It’s because no bottle represents the promise of California white wine better—and the 2021 Annia is truly breathtaking. Exotic and refreshing, it balances beautifully ripe fruit with Italian-inflected zestiness.

“I started Massican with a slightly nostalgic, romantic view of wine,” Dan told us. He recalled his time living in Sicily, where sizzling days cried out for refreshing white wines, and the locals would keep drinking them well into the warm evenings.

Annia brings together three grapes: old-vine Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay that Dan sources from the famed Hyde Vineyard in Carneros, and Ribolla Gialla.

“The blend is never scientific,” he says. “It never repeats, and it’s never from a recipe. It’s about ‘What does it smell and feel like?’ I structure the wine like I’m building a house. The Tocai is the walls, the floor is Ribolla—it’s earthy and savory. Then the Chardonnay is the furniture, the accents, the artwork, and the rug that really ties the room together.”

The result is one of California’s very few must-have white wines.
