He Made 44 Vintages of Petrus

It takes a lot for a vineyard to impress the Berrouet family. They know a great terroir—and its unfulfilled potential—when they see it. Jean-Claude Berrouet spent 44 vintages making $4,000 bottles at Château Petrus. Today his son Olivier is the Director of Winemaking there.

As one of the most respected winemaking dynasties in Bordeaux, you’re in no better hands on the Right Bank. So in 2019, when Jean-Claude and sons Jeff and Olivier laid eyes on Château Bonneau—seven hectares just 11 minutes to the east of Petrus in Montagne-Saint-Émilion—they knew they had to have it.

Château Bonneau is located in Montagne-Saint-Émilion, an appellation just three miles north of Saint-Émilion on the right bank, with very similar soils, separated only by the La Barbanne river. Bonneau can be described as a “mosaic of terroirs,” between its clay-limestone plateaus and sandy clay slopes. It’s a perfect setting for Merlot and Cab Franc, which is why Montagne-Saint-Émilion is noted for being the most Saint-Émilion-like of all of the “satellite” appellations of the Libournais.

It was an easy sell to for Berrouet, who knows winemaking like few others in history: An apprentice of the father of modern enology, Docteur Peynaud, Jean-Claude Berrouet was making Trotanoy before many of today’s wine critics were even born. His first vintage consulting for Dominus Estate was 1983. When the Duncan family of Silver Oak wanted a master to consult on their Twomey project, they called him. And then, of course, Petrus.

Today, Jean-Claude and his sons consult for wineries on multiple continents and are revered for their focus on elegance and purity over raw power and high alcohol. In Bordeaux, the legend-in-the-making 2022 vintage was the perfect showcase for their abilities.

2022 is going to go down as an absolutely legendary year in Bordeaux. “A Place Beyond Praise” is how Vinous titled their report on the vintage, in which they declared: “The 2022 vintage serves as a timely reminder that when Bordeaux fires on all cylinders, it is untouchable.” It was a warm, sunny year that gave lush textures, plenty of fruit, and surprising vibrancy given the solar nature of the year.
