Forty Years of Bolgheri's Best-Kept Secret
Podere Grattamacco is the second estate ever established in Bolgheri—founded in 1977, after only Tenuta San Guido, and before prestigious neighbors like Ornellaia. In 1994, it was one of the houses that signed the modern Bolgheri DOC into being. Despite regularly outperforming far bigger names, it remains one of the region's best-kept secrets.
The estate sits on one of only two hills in Bolgheri, its vines gazing out over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Planted in marl, calcareous sandstone, and clay, they bask in some 300 sunny days a year, tempered by the brisk ocean breezes that keep the wines fresh. Winemaker Luca Marrone and proprietor Claudio Tipa—who also owns Montalcino's famed Poggio di Sotto—farm organically and practice a stripped-back, minimalist approach in the cellar.
Grattamacco has always gone its own way, and the proof is in the blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and a defiant 15% Sangiovese—a nod to Tuscan tradition that almost no one else in Bolgheri dares to make. It's the signature that's set this wine apart since the very first vintage in 1982.
The 2022 is a gorgeous expression of that identity. It pours a youthful red-purple and opens to sweetly perfumed blackberry, violet, pressed sage, and fresh earth. The palate is full and plush, with velvety tannins and that savory Tuscan thread running through a long, balanced finish. There’s grace on the surface and serious structure underneath—a wine built to reward a few years in the cellar and drink beautifully for decades.
This is a classic Super Tuscan collectible at a fraction of the price of its competition—and in a milestone vintage, no less. Reward yourselves now, and your future selves later, with a few bottles.
