2023 Cuatro Rayas Verdejo Cuarenta Vendimias Cuvee Gran Vino de Rueda 750 ml

Hand a glass of this to a table of wine pros and ask them to name it, and you'll hear white Burgundy or a top Loire Chenin before anyone lands on Verdejo. That's the point. This is Rueda's most serious side, a world away from the bright, drink-it-tonight whites the region is known for.

It carries the Gran Vino de Rueda designation, a classification the region created in 2020 for wines grown on its oldest vines. Rueda built its name on fresh, uncomplicated Verdejo, but a handful of growers knew those old vines had more to say—wines with the concentration to reward real time in the cellar. The classification put rules behind that ambition: old-vine fruit, tightly controlled yields, and a minimum year in bottle before a wine can carry the name.

If anyone was going to lead that charge, it figures that it's Cuatro Rayas. The cooperative was founded in 1935, when the grape growers of La Seca pooled their vines and their labor to make something better together than any of them could alone.

Nine decades on, it's become the giant of Rueda—more than 300 grower families, over 2,400 hectares, and close to a fifth of all the white wine the DO bottles. Scale like that usually means safe and simple. Cuatro Rayas went the other way, and were named the DO's Cooperative of the Year in 2025 for it.

For this cuvée, winemaking director Elena M. Oyagüe and winemaker Roberto L. Tello draw on the cooperative's oldest bush-trained parcels, around the villages of La Seca and Serrada.

The wine is fermented plot by plot in a mix of French oak and stainless steel, then left to build texture on its fine lees—the source of its depth, its faint smoke, and its structure.

The name Cuarenta Vendimias—Forty Harvests—nods to the four decades of veteran winemaker Ángel Calleja, whose recipe shaped the family of wines this bottle belongs to.

In the glass, it's a pale straw-gold Verdejo layering lemon zest, white peach, and green melon with fennel, chamomile, and a wisp of smoke and roasted almond from its time in oak. Medium-bodied and precise, orchard fruit and citrus rest over dried herbs and a saline, stony cut, before a finish that's crisp, long, and quietly savory.
