Marlborough's Wildest Corner

The Awatere Valley sits south of the Wairau Plains, separated by a line of hills that strips away much of the rain the rest of Marlborough sees. What's left is a valley forged by a fault line, carved by wind, and cooled by the nearby Pacific Ocean—hard, dryland country that was still mostly sheep pasture when the first vines went in.

It's an unforgiving place to farm, and that's exactly the point. Warm days and cold nights preserve the fruit's natural tension, and the wines that come out of the valley lean toward elegance—a firm mineral backbone under a bright, clean line of acidity. This is genuinely cool-climate viticulture, and it gives the Awatere a voice distinct from the rest of the region.

Eradus works a narrow terrace right at the edge of the Awatere River, where the vines drive their roots deep through rocky soil to stand up to the wind. It's a demanding site, and it rewards the effort with concentration and precision.

Har and Sophie Eradus found their piece of the valley almost by accident. Dutch flower growers who had spent 17 years near Auckland, they came across a slender terrace set between a high bench and the glacial river below and couldn't let it go.

Clearing out an old shed on the property, Sophie turned up the cast-iron door of a potbelly stove embossed with an “H,” an “S,” and an “E”—their own initials, entwined. That emblem became the label.

Their first vintage came off the Breloft Vineyard in 2002. Their son Michiel and his wife Hanna took over the estate in 2004 and run it to this day, guided by a simple philosophy: bend to nature, and let the Awatere Valley imprint itself on every bottle.

Here's what to expect in the glass: pale straw, with passionfruit, pink grapefruit, and lime zest leaping out alongside white currant, fresh-cut herbs, and a whiff of wet stone. It's bright and tightly focused on the palate—layers of citrus, gooseberry, and crisp green apple framed by a signature saline, mineral snap that carries long and mouthwatering through the finish.
