New Zealand’s Next Great Find

There’s a kind of wine discovery that doesn’t happen on a schedule. You taste something, the room goes quiet, and you start doing the math on how much you can get. That’s the short version of how the 2025 Lake Road Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough ended up here.

Lake Road is the project of brothers Andrew and Steven Blampied, third-generation winegrowers from Gisborne, on the eastern edge of New Zealand’s North Island. Their family has been farming this land since the late 1800s—sheep and crops first, then vines, planted in 1975, making the Blampieds among the earliest serious viticulture pioneers in the country. Andrew oversees the viticulture and winemaking; Steven runs sales and has spent years building the brand into one of New Zealand’s most quietly respected independent producers.

The winery’s home base is Gisborne, one of the first places on earth to see the sun each morning, and a region known for generous sunshine, coastal breezes, and richly aromatic fruit. But this bottling draws from Marlborough, on the South Island—New Zealand’s most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc country, and for good reason.

Marlborough’s Wairau Valley is defined by free-draining alluvial soils, long sun-drenched days, and the cooling influence of coastal winds that preserve acidity and aromatics deep into the growing season. It’s a combination that produces Sauvignon Blanc of uncommon precision and energy—and it’s exactly what you’ll find in the glass here.

Lake Road farms sustainably under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand certification, an industry-wide program that covers practices from vineyard to bottle. It’s not a marketing claim—it’s an audited standard, and the wines reflect it.

What makes this bottling stand out isn’t any single element. It’s the combination: the tropical aromatic profile—guava, pineapple, citrus blossom—and a palate that balances lemon, mango, and chamomile against lively, mouthwatering acidity. It’s generous without being flabby, aromatic without being showy.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know when something is going to matter. Lake Road is one of those wines.
