Playing the Market for Under-$30 Champagne

In the wine retail business, it’s always been the magic number. When top-notch Champagne — those estate-grown and -bottled on the most priceless limestone hillsides in the world — is sold for $29.99/bottle, Champagne sells like hotcakes.

But for nearly 15 years currency markets and the soaring price of vineyards outside of Épernay and Reims conspired to make that $29 number impossible to reach.

Back in December, the dollar almost reached parity with euro — the strongest it’s been in the LAST 10 YEARS. So, whether that trend would increase and the USD would finally, once again, eclipse the euro, we figured it was time to flex WineAccess’s buying muscles on a Champagne we’d been eyeing for months.

The Baron family has owned and cultivated land in Champagne since the 17th century. Today the driving forces behind the 90 acre estate are siblings Sophie and Ignace Baron. The domaine is situated smack in the center of their vineyards in the village of Charly-sur-Marne, where the marl, clay and sandy soils of the village provide the perfect home for Pinot Meunier.

The Grand Réserve Brut is a Pinot Meunier-dominated Champagne — 60% in fact, the remainder split between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and changes every year. Pinot Meunier-based Champagnes are known for their juicy fruit, delicacy, and immediate drinkability. The Grand Réserve bottling is based on 40% reserve wine dating back to 2009. The blend is disgorged every month — that way the Champagne remains fresh, with aromas of shortbread cookie and brioche.

The Baron-Fuenté Grande Réserve Brut Champagne is comprised of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Pinot Noir. Pale golden. Tiny, persistent, energetic fine bubbles. Pear, peach pit, and redcurrant scents are livened by suggestions of toasty lees, honey, and marzipan. Fleshy and supple in the mouth, with a chalky minerality lifting the ripe orchard fruit and red berry flavors. Beautifully rich and spicy with a long intense finish.

Thanks to the dollar’s strongest showing in more than a decade against the euro and the sharpening of pencils on both sides of the Atlantic, the Baron-Fuenté Grande Reserve Champagne punches WAY above its weight class. Our LAST 80 cases of this superb Champagne are being offered at just $29.99/bottle. Shipping included on 6.
