The White Wine Sommeliers Love
Terre Stregate sits in the Guardia Sanframondi hills of the Sannio Beneventano, about an hour north of Naples, in a stretch of Campania that has been growing Falanghina since the days of the Roman Empire. The region is sheltered by the Apennines, cooled by altitude, and threaded with the kind of volcanic, mineral-rich clay that leaves its mark on everything grown here. For Falanghina—a grape that thrives on tension between fruit and mineral—it's close to an ideal home.
The Iacobucci family has farmed this land for five generations, since 1898. The modern winery, Terre Stregate—"Bewitched Lands"—was founded in 1988, and today Filomena and Carlo Iacobucci tend 25 organically farmed hectares of native varieties. Falanghina is at the center of everything they do, and the Svelato is their flagship expression of it.
In the cellar, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged on its lees for several months—a process that builds texture and mid-palate weight without sacrificing the bright, driven character that defines Sannio whites. The result is a wine that feels simultaneously crisp and generous, with a saline minerality that runs from the nose all the way through the finish.
The 2024 opens with aromas of lemon zest, white florals, and salty air, before a palate of ginger spice, stone fruit, and citrus takes over—energetic and precise, with an acidity that keeps everything in balance. Gambero Rosso honored it among the finest wines of its vintage.
We've long believed that Sannio Falanghina represents one of the great underappreciated values in Italian white wine—a category that rewards the curious and consistently punches well above its price. The Svelato is as good an argument for that case as we've found.
