Wines to Pair with a 6-Foot Sub & Chips

It’s estimated that the US loses $4 billion in productivity due to post-Super Bowl, um, we’ll say absenteeism. There’s a movement afoot to make the Monday after the big game a holiday, but until that day comes, we say don’t let that productivity perish in vain.

The best way to do that is by savoring every sip we take on Super Bowl Sunday—which means having perfect pairings at the ready.

“A few more feet, and I can fit it in the fridge.”  -Homer Simpson

We don’t recommend you take down a leftover sub by yourself like Homer, but we do recommend taking part of whatever the sub (or hoagie, or grinder), a Super Bowl standby, has to offer. A table-length sando could contain anything—mild turkey and cheese, prosciutto and spicy salami—so your wine choices, like a defense trying to contain a dual-threat QB: You must be ready for anything. That’s why we’d opt for lively high-acid whites like Albariño and Sauvignon Blanc, and do-it-all reds like Pinot Noir and the underrated Valdiguié.

Albariño as It Was Meant to Be

2019 Granbazan Etiqueta Verde Albariño Rías Baixas Spain

A Wine Enthusiast Top 100 wine crafted by one of the most exciting producers in Spain, from grapes grown in some of the best soils in the region, it offers freshness and complexity that makes it impossible to put down.

Tasting Note: Apple and other white fruit aromas come with a touch of lanolin, while this is fresh yet rounded on the palate. Nice flavors of golden apple, white stone fruits and sea salt finish with good length. Drink this rock-solid Albariño through 2021.

Top Contender for Pinot Noir of the Year

2018 Martin Ray Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The 2018 Martin Ray Sonoma Pinot Noir took the Wine Access tasting table by storm, staking out a bold and luscious claim for excellence. All balance and elegance, this 2018 wowed us, and it’ll wow you too!

Tasting Note: Vibrant ruby-violet. Dark raspberry, red cherry, and purple plum notes intermingle with notions of hibiscus and wildflowers. Very clean and elegant in style, this Pinot is light on its feet, buoyant, and lifted with everything in its place. Just simply delicious and very easy to drink. Drink now - 2024.

Valdiguié from a Napa Valley Game-Changer

2018 Wilson Foreigner Valdiguié Rancho Chimiles Napa Valley

This is one of the wines that is changing the face of Napa Valley and California wine, driven by a new generation of winemakers set on proving Napa Valley’s incredible diversity of terroir.

Tasting Note: Attractive and playful purple core with a lively magenta rim. A beautifully orchestrated wine that lies somewhere between Northern Rhône Syrah and Beaujolais. Gifted with a handful of violets on the nose, and complemented by pomegranate, cranberry, blueberry pie sprinkled with fresh cracked black pepper. Uplifting and joyful on the palate with a lovely balance of fruit and spice balance, with a long finish. Drink now - 2026.

Over-Achieving Sauvignon Blanc

2019 Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand

Wine Access members snatch up Tinpot Hut with wild abandon each year because, quite simply, there’s no better Sauvignon Blanc deal than this.

Tasting Note: Pale straw hue. Aromas of grapefruit and thyme jump out of the glass to set up a vibrant palate of fresh guava and melon fruit, accentuated with lemongrass and Meyer lemon. The excellent texture on the mid-palate is bolstered by mouthwatering acidity that sustains on the finish. A perfect aperitif wine, but with the depth to hold up to an array of seafood and grilled fish preparations. A consistent crowd-pleaser! Enjoy now - 2023.
